Volunteers are integral to much of what we do at Emmanuel House. Phil tells us about his involvement…
”I have been volunteering at Emmanuel House for 12 years. I was planning to retire and wanted to get involved in something that would contribute towards the local community in a way that would be interesting and rewarding.
I decided to volunteer with Emmanuel house because I could see immediately that it provides a valuable and caring service for people who need to have a place where they feel safe, comfortable and welcome. I was also impressed by the range of services from a warm shower and a hot meal, to advice on housing and other key issues.
My time with Emmanuel House is spent almost entirely in the kitchen, where I am involved with serving meals and drinks, washing up and food preparation. The kitchen is a great place to work, with a lovely group of
co-volunteers and inspired cooking (and banter) from Joe, the inimitable chef. It is very rewarding because people really appreciate the food, and being served with warmth and respect. Most days for lunch there is a choice of five or six freshly-made dishes.
There are some challenges as things can get pretty hectic, but any issues are sorted with good humour. I really look forward to my weekly sessions and would not be without them.
To anyone who is thinking of volunteering at Emmanuel house, I can only say – Go For It! You will be in for a fulfilling and rewarding experience.”
Do you want to lend your skills to a local independent charity that strives to change the lives of homeless, vulnerable and isolated adults in Nottingham? Do you have time to dedicate on a regular or one-off basis? Do you want to gain experience in support work, customer service, retail, marketing or administration?
We’re always looking for volunteers to join our team and help us to deliver our service, both working directly with beneficiaries or ‘behind the scenes’ of the organisation
