One man describes his experiences this Winter…

We asked one of the service user to describe his experiences this winter…

What was your experience of homelessness was like?

It was the worst experience of my life. I wouldn’t wish it on anyone. You don’t sleep, you just survive. I have never ever begged, stole, done drugs or anything. I kept away from City Centre for safety. I lost my job, which included accommodation and in my case I was a case of 1 pay cheque away.

What was Christmas like for you this year?

I walked around the City Centre on Christmas Day morning. I saw about 10 people rough sleeping. I came to Emmanuel House at 10am. It was amazing, there’s always a friendly face and someone you know.

Have you used the Winter Shelter?

Yes. Without the Winter Shelter a lot of people wouldn’t be here. They wouldn’t be alive with the weather we’re having. It’s not safe to sleep out anyway, when it’s sub zero it is too dangerous!

What would you say to the supporters of Emmanuel House?

To the supporters I want to say ‘THANK YOU!” Without them people wouldn’t have the support that they need.
