If you were to head into the kitchen at Emmanuel House on a Thursday, you’d be met by the wonderful smell of cooking and an eclectic playlist of some of the best music out there. Both of these things can be attributed to Phil, who volunteers in our kitchen on Thursdays, cooking delicious food for our service users.
We chatted with Phil about the time he spends volunteering at Emmanuel House.

How long have you been volunteering at Emmanuel House?
I’ve been cooking at Emmanuel House every Thursday for over a year. It was great timing because the previous cook was leaving, so I could start immediately.
What drew you to Emmanuel House?
I worked as a chef anyway, and I wanted to use those skills to help out at a local soup kitchen. I Googled it and found Emmanuel House.
What do you enjoy about volunteering with us?
The service users always make me laugh and I like the creativity of making a meal based on what is in the store room, or what has been donated recently. You have to use your imagination!

What would you say to someone who’s interested in volunteering at Emmanuel House?
Why not come and give it a go to see if it’s for you? There’s really nothing to lose.
