How many people visited the centre in 2021-2022?
Emmanuel House supports people who are homeless, rough sleeping, in crisis, or at risk of homelessness. Between 1st April 2021 until 31st March 2022, Emmanuel House worked with a total of 739 people across the support centre’s Access team, our outreach services and the Winter Shelter. 488 individual beneficiaries visited the Support Centre 2892 times.
How did you help these people whilst they were at the centre?
This past year at Emmanuel House has been different to previous years due to the effects of Covid-19, which has particularly affected our ability to run activities. The positive outcomes, however, remain consistently high, due to the targeted and dedicated work of our support team.
- We served 1383 meals.
- We gave out 493 new items of clothing.
- We provided 382 hot showers.
- Our barber provided 50 haircuts.
- Beneficiaries participated in cooking classes, guitar lessons and volunteering sessions 41 times.
- We conducted 533 different appointments, supporting people with benefits, health, homelessness, housing and benefit related issues.
What were the positive outcomes for your beneficiaries?
Across the organisation, we achieved a total of 318 positive outcomes for our beneficiaries.
We supported beneficiaries into various forms of accommodation 230 times.
This means we supported an average of 4.42 people into accommodation every week.
- 61 people are now in supported accommodation
- 29 people are living in a private-rented tenancies
- 22 people are in another type of accommodation, such as hostels or shared accommodation
- 7 people are living in social tenancies
- 8 people are now staying in a place of safety, away from a housing situation that them at risk
- 72 people stayed at our Winter Shelter for at least one night
- We supported 24 people into emergency accommodation, such as a hotel
- We reconnected 7 people with friends or family, 6 in the UK and 1 outside of the UK
- 38 people have their full benefits in place
- 3 people have residency status
- 9 people were helped to obtain identity documents
- 18 people registered with a GP
- 3 people were enrolled in training and education
- 7 people have started employment
- 3 people started volunteering
How are your beneficiaries developing?
We have supported our beneficiaries to grow and develop a total of 156 times in the following ways:
- 74 people saw an improvement in their physical health
- 71 people saw an improvement in their mental health
- 61 people improved their ability to manage a tenancy
- 49 people improved their day-to-day living skills
- 49 people reduced the feeling of social isolation
- 37 people either reduced or gained better control of their alcohol use
- 37 people engaged better with their support
- 31 people either reduced, or gained better control of their substance misuse
- 25 people reduced their offending behaviour
“I often ask volunteers what it is they tell their friends they do when they volunteer at Emmanuel House. They often say, ‘I help with the washing up’ or ‘I sort donations’. These are incorrect answers. The correct answer is, ‘I contribute to helping people out of homelessness’. This data demonstrates the great breadth of work that takes place through services provided by Emmanuel House but each piece of work is supported by the generosity of so many people in the community. When someone donates their time, money or items they contribute to supporting people progress out of homelessness or prevent people becoming homeless in the first place.”

This valuable work is being carried out by the three following departments:
- The Access Team at the centre, which delivers basic services
- The Outreach Team, which includes the Independent Living Service, Wellbeing Support Team, our Single Support Service, our Mental Health in the County Support Worker, and our Culturally Specific Support Worker.
- The Winter Shelter, which was open November 2021 – March 2022 and will re-open in October 2022.

In order to cook food for our beneficiaries, we rely on donations from our supporters. If you’d like to contribute to our food provision service, please have a look through our most-needed list of items and arrange a delivery.

We receive no statutory funding for the majority of our core services and we rely on financial donations and the generosity of our community for us to continue supporting people who are homeless in Nottingham.
