Senior Support Worker Gary tells us about his work around one of our key service areas – homelessness prevention in Nottingham

One day of many at Emmanuel House Support Centre

On Friday, a mother and daughter arrived at the support centre. They had been evicted from their council house and the Street Outreach Team had found them rough sleeping in a bus shelter.

To avoid them sleeping rough over the weekend, we supported them to stay in a hotel. On Monday, our Senior Support Worker Gary and member of Framework’s Street Outreach Team found them a room in a supported housing property. We paid for their taxi to get to the property and they had settled in by Monday afternoon.

Another real-life example of homelessness prevention in Nottingham

Also on Monday, a young man in his 20s arrived at the centre with his girlfriend. They were unable to continue living with his mother due to a relationship breakdown. They had been rough sleeping for three days. They went to Housing Aid (the City’s Councils reception for people who are homeless) – there were no properties available and were referred to Emmanuel House. With the Street Outreach Team, we found them a room in a supported housing property and they were there by the evening.

Our support centre is open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. Emmanuel House exists to reduce homelessness through prevention, intervention and recovery. We work with people who are in crisis and need intervention and support to prevent them from becoming homeless. Gary’s work on Monday demonstrates the importance of homelessness prevention and our team’s exemplary work.
