Wellbeing-focussed day trips for people experiencing homelessness

A group of Emmanuel House's beneficiaries, volunteers and staff visiting Matlock Bath on a day trip, hosted by the Wellbeing Support Team.

Emmanuel House’s Wellbeing Support Team recently took a group of beneficiaries on a day trip to Matlock Bath.

Service users enjoyed the beautiful scenery and visited the local aquarium. The group also got stuck into some fish and chips near the River Derwent.

Trips like this are an important part of our Wellbeing Support Team’s services, as they can encourage people to get away from the stress of city life and give them respite from their individual circumstances. Going to these places alone wouldn’t be possible for some of our beneficiaries due to the financial demand and psychological burden involved when planning a trip.

Last year, we also took a few groups to Skegness and to the National Space Centre in Leicester. Roger*, who attended the Space Centre trip, said: “It was absolutely fantastic. I felt like an astronaut as soon as I walked through the door- beam me up Scotty!”

Our Wellbeing Support Team works with people who are homeless and people who have past experiences of homelessness. We believe that it is vital to support people even after they have moved into accommodation, because people who have been homeless can often feel isolated and traumatised by the experience. The Wellbeing Team helps people to recover from the trauma of homelessness and maintain tenancies, preventing people from returning to homelessness.
