Mimi is a Sessional Support Worker at Emmanuel House. She is often the first point of contact for people who are visiting the centre.
“I work two mornings a week on reception for the Access Team’s drop-in sessions. I sign everyone in, serve hot drinks, register new people, get clothes and toiletries and book shower slots for those who need them. I don’t have a case load of beneficiaries that I support, but I’m on hand to help people that drop in to the centre in the mornings – I make phone calls on service user’s behalf, help with forms and issue food bank vouchers. I do a lot of signposting to the different teams at Emmanuel House as well as external services, pointing people in the right direction and making sure they get the help they need.
“I’ve been working at Emmanuel House since September 2022. My background is in court and police interpreting for Spanish and Portuguese people and I have experience of teaching English. I also did a stint in a night shelter in London.
Why did you want to work for a homelessness charity?
“When I applied for the job, I wanted to work in the community and I wanted to work with people. This job feels very purposeful. I help people with very simple tasks but they can be incredibly effective and impactful, whether it’s making a phone call to someone’s GP, getting them some food, sitting down and listening, or helping to get someone a bed in the Winter Shelter. These tasks are simple for me to do, but they can make a big difference to the people we’re working with.
What’s it like working at Emmanuel House?
“The whole team at Emmanuel House is so good at sorting people out and getting the help our visitors need. They make it seem really easy and smooth. The staff are really dedicated to what they’re doing and they’re doing such an amazing job. I feel happy to ask questions as there’s always someone there to give you a hand or a steer.”
