“I’ve had 12 nights outside in the freezing cold for the first time in my life. It wasn’t drink or drugs it was a few bad circumstances. I have friends and family but no one could help me out.
During my first few nights, I had no sleeping bag or blankets. I was wearing 3 hoodies, 2 t shirts, 2 pairs of trousers and 2 jumpers. I walked around the city centre, all over Nottingham, just to stay warm. It starts to get icy around 9pm until the sun comes up when you can feel a bit of warmth.
I think I had frostbite on my fingers and blisters on my feet and ankles. My ankle swelled up from having to keep moving. My socks were wet and I was walking around in what I had. Our bodies aren’t made for it, we need rest.
I found kindness where I didn’t think that was that much help. I’ve been to churches and been given coffee and food.
I’m a sociable person and it’s weird not being able to talk to anyone all day. I’ve had no phone so I’ve been walking around by myself.
Someone told me about Emmanuel House. I didn’t know it was here. I came in and got a hot drink, some food, a shower and fresh clothes.
They referred me to the Street Outreach team, which got me into a hotel and last night I had a good night’s sleep. I will be there until I find somewhere else.”
