Volunteer Spotlight – Eileen’s Story

Volunteers are essential to the running of Emmanuel House. A large number of volunteers work alongside staff in a caring environment, and without them Emmanuel House would not be able to provide this very necessary service to homeless and vulnerable people.

Eileen has been volunteering in the kitchen team at Emmanuel House for 3 years every Friday.  She helps to serve breakfast, lunch and hot drinks.

“Many years ago I gave some money to a young man begging at Nottingham station and I was reprimanded by a passer-by who said I should have given it to a homeless charity. I thought about this episode many times over the intervening years and decided to explore volunteering opportunities with organisations that care for homeless people. I had heard about Emmanuel House and decided to send an email.

I work from home and it is great to spend one morning a week in a busy and friendly environment. I love the interaction with the service users and working with the staff and other volunteers. I have met so many people with different life experiences and personal stories and learnt so much from them.

If you are thinking about volunteering, think about what you want you to do and what time you can offer, what you enjoy doing and what you would like to gain from volunteering.”
