Winter is an incredibly busy time for Emmanuel House, we generally see an increase in the number of people visiting the centre and we are also running the Nottingham Winter-Shelter.
However, homelessness is a year-round issue and Emmanuel House offers support all year round. This year’s Winter Appeal ‘Think Christmas – Give Hope’ was launched on Wednesday 21st November, at Peggy’s Skylight. At the launch, a centre user shared stories of how Emmanuel House has helped transform their life; stories that have also inspired the Appeal’s song, ‘One Cold Winter’s Morning’, that was also performed at the event. ‘One Cold Winter’s Morning’ is to the tune of Away in a Manger and the new words, written by Ruth Shelton, focus on homelessness at Christmas. You can read the words here.
This year’s appeal focuses on how Emmanuel House works with beneficiaries to help them find a home of their own. The different levels of service towards that goal are reflected in the ‘Think Christmas – Give Hope’ campaign artwork of a Christmas tree.
Speaking of the Winter Campaign, Denis Tully, Emmanuel House CEO says ‘Emmanuel House services, and the Winter Shelter we co-ordinate, are an integral part of the plan to reduce homelessness in the city of Nottingham. In 2017-2018 over 900 individuals used the service, amounting to over 17,000 visits to the centre.’ It costs £1000 a day to run our service and as we receive no statutory funding we are reliant on goodwill donations to provide the support and services to centre users. This winter, Think Christmas – Give Hope”.
Money can be donated to our Think Christmas – Give Hope campaign in a variety of ways. The most effective way is to organise a collection and arrange for a cheque or the cash to be brought to the centre. This way, all money raised goes direct to Emmanuel House. The money can also be transferred by bank transfer and we can provide the details for this along with a receipt and thank you letter / certificate for proof of donation. Alternatively, money can be donated via our Virgin Money fundraising page, specific to our Think Christmas – Give Hope campaign.
Donations of food and clothing make a significant difference to the work of Emmanuel House.

“Getting involved with the activities available like the allotment and art classes helped distract my mind from the hell of living on the streets and provided me with a safe, warm and friendly environment to meet others in a similar situation that has helped me from being isolated”.
